Why would the Spurs trade Bruce Bowen for an aging Carter?

SSJ4 Goku asked:

It makes no sense. He;s the best perimeter defender in the NBA and their only line of defense. Trading him would mean trading away their only defense.
I’ve heard the Spurs are the closest to trading for Vince Carter. They offered George Hill, Roger Mason Jr., Bruce Bowen, and Oberto. In return they Vince and Kenyon Dooling.
EDIT-Ummm does best perimeter defender mean anything at all? The Spurs don’t need a scorer, they have Manu and Parker for that…they need their F Bowen playing some lock down defense.

R u kidding me? Carter is younger and better than Bowen. Bowen hasn’t been playing this year with Mason getting major minutes, and last year’s playoff against the Lakers really showed Bowen’s age, he couldn’t stop Kobe if his life counted on it.

Damn the Lakers need to make a trade for Carter, I really want to see VC in a Lakers uniform, trade Odom for Carter and a pick.

EDIT: no on 2nd thought Lamar is our only PF, we can’t afford to part with him right now, but damn Nets are literally throwing VC out, maybe Marrison + Mihm + Walton + Cash for VC

Bruce Bowen is also old. They need Vinsanity to keep up with the Lakers.

i wouldnt like that trade..maybe giving up oberto, udoka, vaughn and mahimni..for them but not bowen, mason and hill..i hope they dont make that mistake..carter is a good player but hes not worth losing those 3 guys…bowen is the best defender in the nba but hes not the only defender the spurs have…but it would be nice to get carter…just not for those 3 guys…where did you hear about that trade?

Bad move. The Spurs are going after sheed. vince Carter can’t hit a jumper if his contract depended on it!

Carter provides a 4th offensive threat for the already solid Spurs. George Hill has the ability to be Bowen off the bench, that is if they dont trade him too.

I watch the Spurs considerably being that I admire their team and if you are like me and have seen your fair share of Spurs games. You would know that Bowen is not the same player and defender he once was. He is 38 and counting and even his corner 3 he does not get the lift he once had and is getting beat on defense by fresher legs. Hence the reason his minutes are few. VC is only 31 and I do not know what you are saying he is healthy this year 7 years younger than Bowen, a mediocre defender. And a scorer. He is the best player on the Nets and is not falling off.

The only knock on him is he becomes complacent and does not try his hardest. Something he admitted when on the Raptors. But, he in a different scenery – a championship one, like the Spurs can do wonders and the Spurs can use his skill set. Remember, VC is 9th all-time in playoff PPG ahead of #10 Shaquille O’Neal remarkably.

Also, getting Dooling – who is a nice offensive addition and a great defensive perimeter addition as well would be, like they have not lost Bowen and upgraded in offense as well. Plus, the Spurs are loaded w/ great defenders and play great help d, so losing Bowen would not be as detrimental as you think.

Not to mention getting Carter would give them athleticism and scoring who can also rebound and pass. He has a well diversified game. It would be, like the Spurs getting back Stephen Jackson and if you do not recall when the Spurs had Steve Jax they won the championship.

Perimeter Defenders: Dooling, Udoka = solid defenders and fresher legs and better scorers than Bowen.

Defenders: Tim Duncan = 1 of best defenders in NBA, Manu Ginobili = solid defender, TP = solid defender, Kurt Thomas = Very good defender, VC = mediocre * Strong help d in general. Look, at Mason never played d in his life in DC comes to a championship built team and d becomes part of his game.

Also, note it could happen the Nets already expressed of being willing to trade VC’s fat contract because they are LBJ23 happy, like most of the league.

I believe the Spurs see an opportunity to make a run for the title and are weighing the benefits of Carter over Bowen. Bowen has slowed a bit and does not start anymore. I also think they are trading age and contract for someone younger with a matching contract. What I don’t understand is why throw in Roger Mason, he can be just as efffective as Carter. But, the Spurs want to try win before Duncan and Ginobli get any older.

No. And I seen an ESPN article who say that the Rockets have a better chance of making a trade with the Nets…

i highly doubt this trade will happen i mean roger mason is a good 3 point shooter also george hill is not bad compared to bowen and oberto which never play anymore
