I’ve heard that sunscreen stops your skin from aging, but do I have to wear it during school?

Little P asked:

I’m starting to put sunscreen on way more often after I started caring more about getting skin cancer and my skin aging faster when I’m older. Do you think I have to apply sunscreen before school so that when I’m in gym or just by the window in class I am protected? Or is it fine to apply it after school before sports? I need sunscreen advice, and what sunscreen do you recommend most?!

All sunscreen does is protect your skin from the sun. The sun itself causes the actual aging to your skin and the cancer. So you want to look for products containing a SPF of at least 15 for daily use.
When sitting by a window, alot of the harmful rays are filtered out by the glass so don’t stress about sitting next to a window.

I would start using a facial moisturizer that has SPF 15 as part of your daily beauty routine. That way if you are putting it on every morning before you leave the house you will be OK.

If you do afterschool sports, or will be outside for a long time then you will want to apply some sunscreen, but just for an average day a moisturizer with SPF 15 should be plenty.

Anytime you have any contact with the sun, there are effects. Do you go out in sunlight to get to school? Are there windows in your classroom? As a previous person said, use a moisturizer with sunscreen, be smart, but don’t spend your life paranoid about this. Enjoy yourself.

Anytime you protect your skin from the sun will help protect you from aging. I would put it on in the morning, and then half an hour before you go outside again. I use a suncreen as my moisturizer in the morning, since makeup with spf 15 in it doesn’t really do much. To get the full spf you need a golf ball size for your body. Now that is a lot, and most of the time if you put an spf 30 on your face, you are actually only putting enough on to give you about a 4 or 5 spf. And anything that is over spf 30 is just more chemicals. It doesn’t protect you any more than an spf 30 would. Use something that is a sunblock, not a suncreen. The sunscreen absorbs the harmful rays, but a sunblock actually blocks them. You want at least 5% of Zinc oxide, and Titanium dioxide I think is about 7-10%. This will give you protection from both UVA and UVB rays. The UVB rays usually cause a sun burn, so that’s what most sunscreens protect against. The UVA rays cause aging, and you can’t see the damage that is being done. I would suggest the Blue Lizard brand of suncreen for a cheap, yet very effective kind. It has a 6% (or 10% in their baby and sensitive skin) zinc, and a 10% titanium dioxide content, i think. I think they even make a face one. It doesn’t smell like sunscreen either. It goes on a little white at first, but once it warms up to your skins temperature, it will rub in just fine.
Good luck, and I think it’s wonderful that you are being so proactive about protecting yourself.

EDIT: Most glass does not filter the UV rays out. There are special treatments that can be done to glass to filter out the rays, but most glass does not have this done.

    hi im chardinae,

i would recomend a really good sunscreen name because they are really good. I wouldnt recomend that you wear it when you are sat by the because you cant really get sunburnt. Also i would put sunscreen on when doing sports because you could get burnt dpending on the sun, but it will not make you wrinkly when you are odler because the sports you do will keep you fit.

if my advice as halped you them i am always willing to help .

here’s what i do…i put sunblock on in the morning before i leave home, everyday. (on my face and neck only)
whenever i’m going to be outdoors for long periods of time (PE class, tennis class, beach, etc), i reapply it before i go outdoors…and for the pool or beach, on my whole body, obviously.

I use this brand of products…

    hope i helped :)
