Is it possible to get grey hair from stress?

Lostmydammind asked:

I thought it was an old wive’s tale, but I have had an extremely stressful time the past two months, and I now see at least 20 grey hairs on my head, and there were NONE there before that! As if the other things weren’t enough, now I am worried about going grey! (Not that it really matters, because I dye my hair anyway.)
“Look at all the past presidents…”

Wow! I was thinking the same thing! My father once observed that!

Look at all the past presidents that you can find both at begining of term and at end. (Exclude Reagan he dyed his.)

    It’s not a wives tale.

Yes, gray hair can be caused by stress and other factors. Don’t worry too much about gray hair, just look at an under 30 yr-old bald man (like me) and consider yourself lucky to not have my hair problems.

i don’t think it has ever been scientifically proven but i believe that it can happen. I am a hairstylist and I have seen young customers get greys during a stressful time and then they are gone. also, there are actual accounts of people turning all white or getting a streak of white from a traumatic experience. just the same you can experience a dramatic loss of hair from a stressful situation.

Oh YES it’s possible! I was married to absolutely the wrong person for 23 years and the stress caused me to premature gray.
But it’s all right. I divorced him and I’ve gone blonde so it worked out!

Extreme stress and even poor nutrition can cause hair to gray. It is seen in individuals that are suffering from malnutrition. Research shows that vitamin and mineral deficiencies can be responsible. Stress both physical and mental can tax the body’s supply of vitamins and minerals. A shortage of copper, B and C vitamins is typically associated with premature graying. However to utilize copper other minerals are necessary too. Sometimes it can be reversed. Stress is also known to impair the immune system primarily because the vitamins and minerals in the body are being used at an accelerated rate. Your body doesn’t know if you can’t balance your checkbook, are thinking of divorcing your spouse, or going to war. Stress does more damage to us than we previously understood.
