14 year old teen is starting to get painful growing pains in his legs?
Lauren asked:
My 14 year old son has been growing quite a bit lately. I think he went from 5’2 to almost 5’3. He says his legs keep getting this real painful straining/burning pain that almost go up to his thigh, but usually its the worst on his shins and calves. In the day time its not that bad, but when night time comes around it really starts geting painful and has caused him tears a few times now.

He hasn’t had any recent injuries in gym class or in any sports, He has a good diet and gets plenty of calcium, iron etc. I’m not totally sure how tall he is supposed to grow, or can estimate since he doesn’t have my blood (was adopted last october)
Whats the best thing to do to treat growing pains? I’ve never dealt with this with a child before, he’s my only kid. I really feel bad for him right now! It started about a week ago, it happened briefly around a month ago but it ended after a day and a half.

i understand completely – my 11 year old has the same problems – started in his legs, but now is back shoulders and neck too.
he has had it for over a year and been fobbed off by doctors all the time. pain relief no longer works and muscle rubs dont help much either.
we are now taking him to a chiropractor.
i suggest the following self help rememdies:
- ibuprofen medicine
-hot baths after sport
-muscle rub before sports
-stretching exercises
-go to doctors and dont be fobbed off!

Hi there! I’m Alan Thicke. You may remember me as Dr. Jason Seaver on TV’s smash hit “Growing Pains.” Those were the best years of my life. You know Lauren when I was doing “Pains,” there was an awful lot of clowning around. A lot of practical jokesters and pranksters. I used to sneak up behind Kirk and put my hands over his eyes like this and say guess who. But he would always guess wrong! Leo did our show. Did you know that? Leo DiCaprio. This one time, me and Leo were clowning around back stage and we accidentally knocked over the Kraft services table but we blamed it all on Tracey Gold. Now you know Tracey had anorexia, right? It’s a terrible disease. She’s a wonderful girl, Tracey. Did you know she runs her own business now? I don’t know if you knew this, Lauren, but Joanna Kearns, she played Mrs. Seaver you know, Joanna and I had a real-life fling during the first couple seasons. If you check out the episodes on DVD, you can really spot the differences in body language. You know, back when I was doing G.P., we would all get together as a cast and watch the premier of each new season in Jeremy Miller’s trailer because – and you’ll get a kick out of this – his agent somehow got Warner Brothers to pay for a big screen cable television. So we would all pile into Jeremy’s trailer after shooting and eat junk food and watch the premier. And Leo used to do this thing where he’d stuff his mouth with about twenty marshmallows – I’m not kidding, twenty marshmallows! – and he’d try to say “chubby bunny” three times fast. Man, he cracked everyone up. And we used to – me and Leo – we used to pal around the set and mess with Kirk and Tracey. Hehe oh man we were thick as thieves. Or Thicke as thieves, you could say? Hohoh. Well I hope that answers your question and don’t forget to catch re-runs of “Growing Pains” weeknights at 7pm pst on TV Land!

My son went from 5 nothing at 11 to 5’8 by 14 and he had terrible growing pains, especially in the legs. First, you might want to schedule a doctor’s appointment to be sure it isn’t something else such as arthritis, chemical imbalance or vitamin deficiency or something else. Growing pains can be treated with ibuprofen or tylenol, warm compresses and massage. Your son can also try leg stretches to help the muscles stretch as he grows, these really helped my Ben with his legs pains. It’s a bit frustrating because there really isn’t much else that can be done other than ease the symptoms. They will pass with time and your son will gradually become able to cope with them. My own son finally stopped growing at 6’8, but only had growing pains right at the beginning. Here are a few articles that I found on-line that pretty much echo what my doctor told me:
