14 year old teen is starting to get painful growing pains in his legs? Best treatment?
Lauren asked:
My 14 year old son has been growing quite a bit lately. I think he went from 5’2 to almost 5’3. He says his legs keep getting this real painful straining/burning pain that almost go up to his thigh, but usually its the worst on his shins and calves. In the day time its not that bad, but when night time comes around it really starts geting painful and has caused him tears a few times now.

He hasn’t had any recent injuries in gym class or in any sports, He has a good diet and gets plenty of calcium, iron etc. I’m not totally sure how tall he is supposed to grow, or can estimate since he doesn’t have my blood (was adopted last october)
Whats the best thing to do to treat growing pains? I’ve never dealt with this with a child before, he’s my only kid. I really feel bad for him right now! It started about a week ago, it happened briefly around a month ago but it ended after a day and a half.

Hot and cold packs on the shins, and heating pads work too, I have a 14 year old daughter and she is going through the same thing, when he walks tell him not to stomp his foot down, the pain will lessen eventually and it is a growing pain. Oh and IB profen for the pain also helps especially at night to help them sleep. For now though light exersice and plenty of fluids also, water helps. Hope he feels better and God bless.

First of all, take him to a doctor to ensure it’s not something serious. Short term, there’s nothing wrong with using mild painkillers, especially if the pain prevents him from sleeping.

Helping Your Child
Some things that may help alleviate the pain include:
* massaging the area
* stretching
* placing a heating pad on the area
* giving ibuprofen or acetaminophen (Never give aspirin to a child under 12 due to its association with Reye syndrome, a rare but potentially fatal disease.)
When to Call the Doctor
Alert your doctor if any of the following symptoms occur with your child’s pain:
* persistent pain, pain in the morning, or swelling or redness in one particular area or joint
* pain associated with a particular injury
* fever
* limping
* unusual rashes
* loss of appetite
* weakness
* tiredness
* uncharacteristic behavior
I hope this helps! Check out the website (from the source) for more info… I wish you and your son the best.
